8:35 a.m., Nov. 2, 2009----The University of Delaware Student Centers' Blue Hen Leadership Program (BHLP) offers students a range of opportunities to develop leadership skills, enhance relationships in the campus community, increase knowledge about organizational management and explore local and global culture.
"We are very excited to be able to offer a program that we hope will strengthen and diversify the leadership skills of University of Delaware students while also allowing them to make a positive impact on the University and the community in general,” said Steve Kramarck, Student Centers assistant director, who is coordinating the BHLP program with fellow assistant directors Matt Lenno and Alex Keen.
“Our expectation is that anyone who participates in the Blue Hen Leadership Program will emerge as a better leader and a more well rounded individual. These skills should serve them well long after they graduate from Delaware,” Kramarck said.
The program consists of lectures, workshops, service projects, conferences and select educational experiences in the following categories: Service and Action Learning, Cultural Understand and the Arts, and Organization Management and Leadership.
Recent opportunities have included bus trips to the White House and New York City, a program on alcohol abuse and leadership training.
Programs offered in November include a presentation on cross-gender communication at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Multipurpose Room A of the Trabant University Center; a discussion of LGBT issues at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Room 206 of the Trabant University Center; a trip to the “Body Worlds” exhibit at the Franklin Institute on Saturday, Nov. 7; training for intervention procedures at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12, in Room 206 of the Trabant University Center; and mentoring at Shue-Medill Middle School on Friday, Nov. 13.
Also, there will be a service project at the Food Bank of Delaware on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
Students who attend at least eight programs across at least two of the three categories are eligible to be considered for the Blue Hen Leadership Program Scholarship, with a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to the winner and a $500 scholarship to the runner-up. In addition to program participation, students must complete an application that includes an essay on leadership.
Up to date BHLP information is included on a Facebook page -- go to Facebook and search for Blue Hen Leadership -- and through Twitter feeds.
BHLP is also being featured on the University's Student Events Web site.
