11:13 a.m., Nov. 3, 2009----In the first public keynote address since his return from a tour of duty in Iraq, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden will address the incoming class of 30 Public Allies at a breakfast Nov. 6.
Public Allies Delaware is an AmeriCorps program of the University of Delaware's Center for Community Research and Service in the College of Education and Public Policy.
Public Allies' mission is to advance new leadership to strengthen communities, nonprofits, and civic participation. The program offers a nationally recognized AmeriCorps program that provides a pathway for select, talented and diverse young leaders to emerge in Delaware communities.
Allies are placed in 10-month, paid professional apprenticeships at local nonprofits where they create, improve, and expand services to address varying issues, including youth development, education, public health, community and economic development, the environment, arts and culture, and housing. Currently there are allies placed at nonprofits such as Communities in Schools of Delaware, Autism Delaware, The Elizabeth House, Connecting Generations and many more.
Allies also participate in weekly workshops with local community and civic leaders on topics such as public speaking, conflict resolution, diversity and oppression, and media relations. Allies collaborate to develop community projects in addition to the service they provide individually at their apprenticeships.
Also scheduled to speak at the breakfast are David Nicoli, vice president of corporate affairs at AstraZeneca; Jim Purcell, executive director of Communities in Schools; and Michael Gamel-McCormick, dean of the College of Education and Public Policy.
The breakfast will be held from 8:30-10 a.m. at the Goodwill Center, 300 East Lea Blvd., in Wilmington. If you are interested in attending, please contact Tina Morrow, director of Public Allies Delaware, at (302) 573-4438 or [cgarrett@udel.edu].
