Students began their day with a tour of the floor of the NYSE, followed by a brief presentation from alumni and other representatives from Deutsche Bank.

In the afternoon, students enjoyed a special visit to the 37th floor boardroom of L'Oréal to listen to an overview of the company. While there, students also learned about “A Taste of L'Oréal,” an event that students will have the opportunity to apply to in the fall.

All students who participated in the trip are majors in the Lerner College of Business and Economics, and ranged in experience from first year students to MBA students.

Ashley Paintsil, a first year student, described the trip as an amazing experience.

“I gained more out of going to New York to visit the L'Oréal offices than I ever expected,” she said. “I mean, wow -- I saw Simon Doonan [creative director at Barney's New York] on the streets just outside of his office at the L'Oréal building. It really inspired me and got me motivated to do more in regards to my career.

“Going to the NYSE to see how things work was also an amazing and surreal experience. Meeting with Delaware alums who are now living their dreams at the stock exchange was so wonderful to see. Their drive and passion really pushed me to work harder. I never thought I would be standing there. All in all, I had a wonderful time in New York.”

Hailey Desser, a sophomore business major, also said she enjoyed the experience.

“I had an absolutely amazing time and have been raving about the trip since,” she said. “It was so valuable to see and experience these companies firsthand. It actually excites me about the future.

“The NYSE was also quite an experience. I still cannot believe how different it is with all the technology updates. I am going to keep my visitor's pass forever because I know I will not have many similar opportunities even close to that ever again.”

Iris Gupta, an MBA student, observed a common theme among all the professionals she met.

“One thing that came out loud from this trip was that planning ahead for your career is the key to long-term success,” she said. “The senior managers at Deutsche Bank and human resources managers at L'Oréal had the same opinion. According to them, if you have a passion about something, nothing can stop you from succeeding.”

Jill Panté, assistant director of the Lerner College Career Services Center, said students interested in working for Deutsche Bank or L'Oréal should consider interning during their sophomore or junior year if they wish to be considered for full-time opportunities. To apply to internships, students should visit the company websites directly.

The mission of the Lerner College Career Services Center is to assist Lerner College undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni in all aspects of their career development process. The center aims to connect students to employers, career resources, services and programming specific to the Lerner College, and fosters strong partnerships with employers to identify opportunities for student internships and full-time employment.

The Excel Program, co-sponsor of the trip, is a registered student organization that offers comprehensive academic and financial support to students in the Lerner College. The program aims to recruit and retain academically talented students; to provide assistance to students who are facing challenging social, economic, educational, cultural or other life circumstances; and/or offer need as determined by federal income guidelines (FAFSA). The program also includes assistance to underrepresented students of the Lerner College.
