The new officers, who will serve during the 2011-12 academic year, include Jeffrey Jordan, professor of philosophy, president-elect; Belinda Orzada, professor of fashion and apparel studies, vice president-elect; Donald Lehman, associate professor of medical technology, chairperson of the Committee on Committees; and Steven Eidelman, H. Rodney Sharp Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, member at-large on the Committee on Committees.

Resolutions approved included formation of a new College of Education and Human Development, which will incorporate the School of Education and the Department of Human Development and Family Studies and their affiliated centers.

Other resolutions approved include:

  • The School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy will report to the Office of the Provost as a freestanding unit until a permanent resolution is presented to the Faculty Senate within the 2010-11 academic year;
  • The proposed Open Research Policy that comprises Section 3: Conduct of Academic Programs-Research Program Policies in the Faculty Handbook;
  • The transfer of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences from the College of Arts and Sciences to the College of Engineering; and
  • The Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies will move administratively from the College of Education and Public Policy to the College of Arts and Sciences.

Senators also approved a resolution that a standing Faculty Senate subcommittee, with representation from all the colleges and reporting to the Senate Undergraduate Studies Committee, would provide oversight of the placement of breadth courses in appropriate categories. The proposed subcommittee will ensure that the intent of breadth remains inclusive while maintaining a substantial list of courses that encourage exploration by the students in areas outside of their major.

All of the approved resolutions require approval by the UD Board of Trustees, which will meet at 3 p.m., Tuesday, May 11, in the Multipurpose Rooms of the Trabant University Center.

Consent agenda

The Faculty Senate approved several recommendations during the consent agenda portion of its meeting. Approved items include adding concentrations in Chinese studies and Japanese studies, both in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

Senators also approved requests to revise the major in sport management, as well as revising the minor in art. Requests to revise the astronomy/astrophysics concentration in the physics major, and the minor in music, jazz studies, also were approved.

Graduate studies motions approved in the consent agenda voting include adding a new concentration in healthcare policy to the master of business administration and revising the master's degree in economics program requirements and policy statement.

Undergraduate and graduate studies recommendations approved during the consent agenda section of the Faculty Senate meeting do not require approval by the UD Board of Trustees.

Online catalog

Margaret Andersen, acting associate provost for academic affairs, described efforts to update the UD online catalog.

“We wanted to get a good idea of what an online catalog should really look like,” Andersen said. “We have put some good ideas together to make it work.”

Andersen said the online catalog is a work in progress, and that faculty could print out a PDF version if they preferred a printed copy.
