9:26 a.m., May 6, 2010----Jim Broomall, assistant provost for the Division of Professional and Continuing Studies at the University of Delaware, has been appointed by the Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) as the new editor of its peer-reviewed research publication, the Journal of Continuing Higher Education.
"It is a pleasure and an honor to serve as editor of this publication," said Broomall. "The University of Delaware has a rich history in continuing studies and outreach to adult and other nontraditional learners. Serving as the Journal's home is a testimony to this tradition."
"We are pleased and delighted about Jim's prestigious editorship that recognizes his significant contributions to continuing higher education scholarship," said Debra Hess Norris, UD vice provost for Graduate and Professional Education. "Jim's leadership will further strengthen the Journal of Continuing Higher Education, and in doing so, bring wider visibility to the University of Delaware's commitment to continuing studies."
The University of Oklahoma's James P. Pappas is ACHE's current executive vice president. He commented, "In our difficult financial times, professionals involved in continuing higher education rely on their professional organizations to inform and equip them to face these and emerging administrative and educational challenges."
Pappas outlined some of the issues facing the field -- rapidly evolving technology, the problematic economy, limited institutional resources, changing student demographics, and a global and interdependent environment. "This makes organizations like ACHE and its journal even more important to continuing higher educators,” he said. “By publishing research, thoughtful analyses, reports of best practices, and relevant book reviews, the Journal of Continuing Higher Education serves the significant needs of professionals in the field of continuing higher education."
ACHE president-elect Tish Szymurski added, "I am elated to be working with Jim in his role as editor of our publication. The Journal is critical to advancing our field through shared research and best practices; it will no doubt thrive with Jim's direction and professionalism." Szymurski is dean of Continuing Adult and Professional Studies at Neumann University, and previously a continuing education program coordinator at UD.
Broomall joined the University in 1988 as associate director in the Division of Continuing Education; in 2001 he was named assistant provost for the reestablished Division of Professional and Continuing Studies. He holds an affiliate faculty appointment in the School of Education.
An honors graduate of the University of Delaware, Broomall completed a master's degree in adult education at North Carolina State University and his doctorate in higher education at Penn State. He served as national president of the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) in 2004-2005, and is an external review member for the Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities and the American Council on Education.
The Journal of Continuing Higher Education is published three times a year by Routledge of the Taylor & Francis Group, and is available in print and online. The upcoming May/July 2010 issue is the first issue under Broomall's editorship.
