1:34 p.m., March 5, 2010----The University of Delaware Department of Music presents the UD Faculty Jazz and Jazz Ensemble I with Kenny Werner, guest pianist, at 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 10, in Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E du Pont Music Building, 100 Orchard Rd., Newark.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Werner studied at the Manhattan School of Music and the Berklee School of Music in Boston.

The accomplished jazz musician was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002 for best instrumental composition for “Inspiration” and has performed at most of the major festivals in the world, including Tanglewood and the Newport Jazz Festival.

In 1996, Werner published a groundbreaking book on the emotional, spiritual, physical and psychological aspects of mastering and performing titled Effortless Mastery. Recent works have include “Lawn Chair Society” for Blue Note Records and “The Delirium Blues Project: Serve or Suffer” for Half Note Records.

Cellist Peter Stumpf to perform March 11

The next evening, Thursday, March 11, guest cellist Peter Stumpf of the Los Angeles Philharmonic will perform with UD pianist Christine Delbeau in a faculty artist recital at 8 p.m. in Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts.

After serving 12 years as associate principal cello of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Stumpf became the principal cello of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the start of the 2002-2003 season.

At the age of 16, he began his professional career, playing in the Hartford Symphony. He received a bachelor's degree from the Curtis Institute of Music and an artist diploma from the New England Conservatory.

A dedicated chamber music musician, Stumpf is a member of the Johannes String Quartet and has appeared on chamber music series at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Walt Disney Concert Hall, in Cologne, at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and at Casals Hall in Tokyo.

He has performed with the chamber music societies of Boston and Philadelphia and at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico as well as the Festivals of Marlboro, Santa Fe, Bridgehampton, Ottawa, Great Lakes, Ojai, Spoleto, and Aspen.
