9:11 a.m., March 24, 2010----On Wednesday April 28, the University of Delaware College of Agriculture and Natural Resources will unveil a portrait of John G. Townsend, Jr., in Townsend Hall, which bears his name.

At the reception, to be held from 3:30 to 5p.m. in the Townsend Hall Commons, Richard B. Carter, author of the book Clearing New Ground, The Life of John G. Townsend, Jr., will give remarks and host a book signing. Refreshments will be served. Those who plan to attend should RSVP to Alice Moore at [ammoore@udel.edu] or (302) 831-2504.

Originally named Agricultural Hall, Townsend Hall was re-named and dedicated to the memory of Mr. Townsend, a prominent spokesperson for farmers and the agricultural industry who was Delaware's governor from 1916-1920 and served as a U.S. Senator from 1928-1940.

The portrait, painted in 1920 by Clawson S. Hammitt, was donated by P. Coleman Townsend, Jr., and Susan M. Townsend of Wilmington, both UD graduates.

Hammitt, of Wilmington, Del., painted portraits that hang in the U.S. Capitol, the State House in Dover and at the University of Delaware.

The Townsends have been involved as trustees in numerous non-profit organizations in the region, including Winterthur Museum and Country Estate, Delaware Art Museum, Delaware College of Art and Design and the Delaware Center for Horticulture. As well, P. Coleman Townsend, Jr. is a member of the University of Delaware board of trustees.
