10:06 a.m., March 3, 2010----The Model United Nations of the University of Delaware had another strong showing at a prominent national conference, this time at the Harvard University National Model United Nations gathering held from Feb. 11-14 in Boston.

The Harvard Model United Nations conference is routinely one of the largest and most prestigious in the world and the University of Delaware delegates faced stiff competition from more than 3,000 delegates representing 35 different countries.

Among the countries represented were France, Venezuela, China and the Netherlands, while some of the American universities that sent teams were Yale, the U.S. Military Academy, Emory and Vanderbilt.

The UD team received two awards for delegate performance at the closing ceremonies.

Amanda Brizendine, a senior majoring in English and political science, received honorable mention, the third highest award for her committee of more than 135 delegates that completed a simulation of the World Council on Women.

Lucas Warford, a junior Honors Program student who is majoring in international relations with minors in Latin American Studies and Spanish and who serves as president of the Model United Nations at the University of Delaware, received the Outstanding Delegate Award, the second highest award for his committee of 150 delegates that did a simulation of a historical U.N. General Assembly taking placing in the run-up to the 1994 crisis in Rwanda.

The honors at Harvard follow an earlier outstanding performance in November 2009 at the University of Pennsylvania.

“Delaware's Model United Nations team is traveling to some of the most competitive conferences in the country and competing with delegates from the top universities, not just in the United States, but from around the world, and not only are we keeping up in committee, but we are being recognized for our work,” Warford said.

The main goals of the UD team are “providing a forum for the debate of international issues on campus at UD and representing the University of Delaware in Model U.N. competitions at other universities,” he said.

The UD team has an upcoming event at the New York University Model U.N. conference slated for April 16-18 in New York City.
