April 15: Baseball player, commentator Doug Glanville to speak

12:33 p.m., March 11, 2010----Doug Glanville, the former Major League Baseball player who is now a noted sports commentator and columnist for The New York Times, will be the speaker in the University of Delaware Presidential Lecture Series spring presentation at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 15, in Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts.

Glanville is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in systems engineering, and was a first round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs in 1991.

He made his Major League debut as an outfielder for the Cubs in June, 1996, and went on to spend nearly a decade in the big leagues with the Cubs, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Texas Rangers.

A student of labor history, Glanville served on the executive subcommittee of the Major League Baseball Players Association and as a player representative.

Currently, Glanville writes “Heading Home” as an op-ed columnist for The New York Times, works as a baseball analyst for XM Radio and is a contributor with Comcast SportsNet Chicago. He also serves as mentor for high school student athletes and their parents in his "Ask Doug" column for Baseball Factory.

Glanville has put his Penn engineering degree to good use by founding GK Alliance, LLC, a green-friendly real estate development company specializing in residential building in the western suburbs of Chicago.
