2:27 p.m., June 22, 2010----The National Federation of Press Women presented 11 awards -- including eight first place awards -- to the University of Delaware in its 2010 NFPW Communications Contest.

Winning entries were from UD's Sea Grant College Program, the Marine Public Education Office in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE), and the Office of Communications and Marketing.

Also recognized were students in a class on broadcast news documentary taught by Ralph Begleiter, Rosenberg Professor of Communication, Distinguished Journalist in Residence and director of the Center for Political Communication.

The broadcast news documentary class took first place in the radio/television category for special television programming for the documentary Left Behind: Chrysler's Newark Assembly Plant Past, Present and Future. It was the latest in a string of honors for the production.

Other first-place honors went to:

Lisa Tossey, marine outreach specialist, and Tamara Beeson, graphic designer, both in CEOE, in the Internet communications category for website development, for their work on the Delaware Sea Grant program website.

Tamara Beeson and Ron Ohrel, director of the Marine Public Education Office, in the print media advertising category for billboards, for their work on a School of Marine Science and Policy mural.

Elizabeth Boyle, production coordinator, Lisa Tossey, Ron Ohrel and Kimberly Doucette, administrative assistant, in the electronic media advertising category for a single commercial or campaign built around one subject, for their work in preparing the Sea Talk public service announcements.

Molly Chappell, senior art director in the Office of Communications and Marketing, with David Barczak, senior art director, and Martin Mbugua, former senior news editor, in the communications programs and campaigns category for a marketing program or campaign for a service or product, for their work on the Delaware Environmental Institute website and the UD environmental portal.

Ron Ohrel and Robert DiIorio, video producer in IT-University Media Services, in the communications programs and campaigns category for video productions, for their work on a College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment presentation.

Molly Chappell and Elizabeth Chajes, communications manager for the Delaware Environmental Institute, in the public relations printed materials category for general reports, for their work on A Blueprint of UD's Value to the Diamond State.

Tracey Bryant, associate director in the Office of Communications and Marketing, with David Barczak, senior art director, Pamela Donnelly, production coordinator, and Christian Derr, Web developer/Web designer, in the achievement/research individual achievement category, for their work on Extreme 2009: An Antarctic Adventure.

Second-place honors went to:

Tamara Beeson, Elizabeth Boyle and Sara Orhel, in the print media advertising category for the 2009 Coast Day poster.

Tracey Bryant, David Barczak, and Pamela Donnelly in the public relations printed materials category for an external annual report, the University of Delaware Research Annual Report.

Third-place honors went to:

Andrea Boyle, senior editorial coordinator in the Office of Communications and Marketing, in the information for the media category for a news release, “Men Behind the '08 Presidential Campaigns Speak Together.”

The UD honorees were among 35 members of the Delaware Press Association who received national awards in the NFPW contest.
