12:39 p.m., June 4, 2010----Tsu-Wei Chou, Pierre S. du Pont Chair of Engineering at the University of Delaware, recently delivered two talks at the University of Limerick in Ireland as part of the Materials and Surface Science Institute (MSSI) Distinguished Lecture Series.

His first lecture provided an assessment of the science and technology of carbon nanotube-based fibers and composites; the second addressed carbon nanotube-based health monitoring of fiber composites.

MSSI is a center of excellence that generates state-of-the-art fundamental research on topics of industrial significance in the fields of surface science and materials. The MSSI Distinguished Lecture Series was inaugurated in 2008 with the aim of inviting world-leading scientists and engineers to the institute for a period of two to three days to deliver lectures and interact with researchers there.

“We are delighted to welcome Professor Chou to MSSI,” said director Edmond Magner. “His visit is a wonderful opportunity to discuss international developments in composites, a major focus of research at UL for nearly two decades and a key aspect of the research conducted in MSSI.”

Chou's research interests span a range of areas including textile composites, nanocomposites, and structural health monitoring of composite structures.

The University of Limerick has worked with most of the major European aerospace companies on projects such as the current Airbus-led, MAAXIMUS project, which is developing the next generation of design and manufacturing techniques for future composite aircraft fuselage structures.
