James M. Jones, professor of psychology, was quoted in a July 29 Wall Street Journal story about humor in the face of a weak economy. "Humor makes you feel in control and it can give you that feeling that everything is okay even when it's not," Jones told the WSJ.

Laurence Seidman, Chaplin Tyler Professor of Economics, was featured in a July 29 Wall Street Journal Real Time Economics blog entry on the need for additional government stimulus to boost the economy.

Justin Martinson, a member of the UD golf team, was highlighted in July 29 News Journal and WDEL-AM stories as he won the Delaware State Golf Association's 44th annual Delaware Open.

Joe Flacco, former Blue Hen quarterback, was featured in July 29 stories in the Philadelphia Daily News and Cherry Hill Courier Post, in the July 26 Baltimore Sun and in the July 31 News Journal, as he prepared to open training camp for his second season with the Baltimore Ravens. New UD quarterback Pat Devlin was featured in a July 30 Philadelphia Daily News story.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a July 29 Bloomberg news service story about international investors and difficulties they face in getting a voice in Japanese companies. Elson also appeared July 28 on American Public Media's Marketplace program to discuss proposed federal legislation to give shareholders a say on executive compensation, and was quoted in a July 28 Bloomberg story on AIG, a July 28 Financial Times story on Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement of the “clawback” law and a July 26 Investment News story on compensation reform efforts.

William Poole, Distinguished Scholar in Residence in the Lerner College of Business and Economics, wrote a commentary in the July 28 Forbes concerning government efforts to extend the nation's state-of-the-art health care, arguing that resources are finite.

An Associated Press news crew visited the UD Ice Arenas on July 28 to interview Canadian figure skating champion Patrick Chan, who has been training at the University.

Richard Wool, professor of chemical engineering, was featured in a July 27 LiveScience story on MSNBC concerning research on the use of waste chicken feathers to store hydrogen for fuel cells.

Joan Buttram, director of the Delaware Education Research and Development Center, was quoted in a July 27 News Journal story about a DERDC study that identified best practices at successful high schools.

James Newton, professor emeritus of Black American Studies, was quoted in a July 26 News Journal story about a restored newsreel that captured life in Wilmington in 1957.

Lindsay Hoffman, assistant professor of communication, was quoted in a July 26 News Journal story about the impact of YouTube and social media on issues such as the “birther” movement. "It becomes sort of a spiral," she said. "This information is passed along and passed along and passed along, and it reaches a culmination when you get traditional media coverage."

Ben Yagoda, professor of English, was quoted in a July 25 story in The New York Times concerning the death of author Frank McCourt.

Sharon Merriman-Nai, project director with the National Center on Elder Abuse in UD's Center for Community Research and Service, was quoted discussing risk factors for elder abuse, including dementia, in the July 24 issue of the Bend (Ore.) Bulletin. On July 29, she was quoted in the Virgin Islands Daily News discussing factors that contribute to the under reporting of suspected elder abuse, and difficulties in tracking statistics nationally.

John McDonald, a UD graduate, was featured in a Los Angeles news video clip aired July 24 on WPVI-TV in Philadelphia about his heroism in pulling a child from a burning vehicle.

Jan Blits, professor of education, and Linda Gottfredson, professor of education, were featured in a July 13 National Association of Scholars article concerning work they conducted nearly 20 years ago that provided the statutory authority for Justice Anthony Kennedy's majority opinion in the Supreme Court's landmark decision last month in Ricci v. DeStefano, a case involving firefighters, race and standardized tests in New Haven, Conn. The article credits Blits and Gottfredson, both NAS members, for their roles in convincing Congress to amend the 1991 Civil Rights Acts so that the acts would not include “race norming” on standardized tests.

Meryl Gardner, associate professor of business administration, was interviewed June 29 on the WHYY Delaware Tonight news program concerning the new stores and food court at Christiana Mall from a consumer psychology perspective.
