10 a.m., July 9, 2009----University of Delaware policy and federal law (45 CFR 46) require that all research involving living human subjects be reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB).

The University's Research Office is pleased to announce its adoption of IRBNet, a robust suite of electronic tools now available for use by the UD research community to facilitate the submission, review, and management of human subjects research protocols.

Protocol submissions to UD's IRB are to be submitted using IRBNet starting July 9.

“This set of online tools is designed to expedite the process by which human subjects protocols are submitted and reviewed, reducing the need for manual, paper-based procedures,” says Mark Barteau, senior vice provost for research and strategic initiatives. “It's an important step in the Research Office's ongoing effort to provide excellent service to UD researchers, and through practices that demonstrate the University's commitment to environmental sustainability.”

IRBNet is a recognized leader in research compliance software. It was developed in 2001 through a cooperative venture of Dartmouth College and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, funded under the National Institutes of Health program for Human Subjects Research Enhancement Awards.

Some of IRBNet's features include electronic document management, Web-based protocol sharing and collaboration, automatic notifications, electronic submissions and reviews, and important audit capabilities including electronic revision histories, electronic signatures, and event tracking.

“We chose IRBNet not only for the important capabilities that it provides, but also because IRBNet is secure, Web-based, and extremely intuitive and easy to use,” notes Elizabeth “Missy” Peloso, UD's director of compliance.

You may now self-register at the IRBNet Web site as part of the University of Delaware community and immediately begin using these exciting new tools.

Campuswide training in the use of IRBNet will be offered on Tuesday, July 21, from 10-11 a.m. in 228 Purnell Hall, and on Wednesday, July 29, from 2-3 p.m. in 117 Gore Hall.
