RecycleMania 2010 is now under way and will run through Saturday, March 27, and the entire campus community is encouraged to participate by recycling paper, bottles, cans and corrugated cardboard.

“As we begin the RecycleMania 2010 competition, the best support that students and other members of the campus community can provide is to participate in the on-campus recycling program,” said Ryan Boyer, marketing manager for UD Dining Services, one of several University organizations involved in the annual RecycleMania event.

“The University of Delaware's transition to a single stream recycling campus will have a great impact on our final ranking in this year's competition. Over the past four years, UD has reported over 360,000 pounds of recycled materials during the Recyclemania competitions. Last year, 145,000 pounds was reported. I believe that this campus has an opportunity to significantly increase our reported totals from last year,” Boyer said.

He added, “Our success as a whole will be determined by the campus community's participation and commitment to recycling. The opportunity to rank high in this year's competition is there. It is up to each of us to do our part.”

RecycleMania at the University of Delaware is being sponsored by Dining Services, Residence Life, Facilities/Grounds and Custodial Services with the support of the Office of Communications and Marketing and the Office of the Executive Vice President.

Throughout the competition, the University will be reporting all of its recycling weights for co-mingled or single stream recycling.

The University's progress in the competition will be tracked on the Dining Services Web site. Each week, a tracking meter on the Dining Services homepage will be updated showing the total reported weight to date.

Also, information on recycling totals and rankings can be found at the RecycleMania Web site.

Recyclemania began in 2001 as a competition between Ohio University and Miami University of Ohio, and has grown tremendously each year since. Each year since the inception of the competition, the number of entries has grown substantially. This year, there are 510 participating institutions.

RecycleMania is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise program and the National Recycling Coalition, and is coordinated as a project of the National Recycling Coalition's College and University Recycling Council.

The Coca-Cola Company, the American Forest and Paper Association and Keep America Beautiful are major sponsors of RecycleMania.
