Several UD faculty are involved in the competition each year, according to Louis F. Rossi, associate professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and an advocate for the FLL, and University of Delaware Engineering Outreach is a co-sponsor.

“There is nothing in the world like FIRST Lego League,” Rossi said. “It provides an outlet for boys and girls who have the ability to see the enormous potential of technological solutions to contemporary problems in society. The FLL projects require both broad and deep thinking about automation, algorithms and mechanics. The human elements are all on display at the expo as the teams celebrate their work and share their projects with one another.”

FIRST is an acronym for the phrase For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, and every year FLL works with experts in the field to create a challenge that relates to a significant real-world issue.

Louis G. Rosanio, tournament director, said Saturday's event is unique in that it will feature three competitions under one roof. They are the Junior FIRST Lego League for young primary school children, the FIRST Lego League for students ages 9-14 and the FIRST Tech Challenge for high school students.

More than 110 teams from Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, New York and Washington, D.C., will compete in the three categories.
