8:46 a.m., Feb. 2, 2010----U.S. Sen. Thomas R. Carper (D-Del.) will be the opening speaker in the University of Delaware School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy's spring seminar series, Contemporary Issues in Public Administration.

Carper will speak at 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 15, in Room 106 of the Center for Composite Materials. He will discuss the work of the subcommittee he chairs, the Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information and International Security, and improving federal management and reducing waste in a range of areas from energy use to information technology.

A reception will be held immediately following the lecture.

All other lectures in the series will begin at 5 p.m. in Room 187 of Graham Hall. The full seminar series schedule is listed below:

March 2 -- Robert Glen, Delaware's state bank commissioner, will discuss the role of housing in the financial meltdown and what comes next for state and federal regulators.

March 16 -- Paul Calistro, executive director of the West End Neighborhood House in Wilmington, will discuss entrepreneurship and nonprofit organizations.

March 23 -- Walter Broadnax, Distinguished Professor of Public Administration at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, will discuss leadership skills for the 21st century public administrator. Broadnax is the visiting Messick Scholar in the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy this spring.

April 13 -- Racquel Russell, legislative adviser to Sen. Carper for health policy, will discuss the policy and politics of heath care.

April 27 -- Jeffrey Raffel, Charles B. Messick Professor of Public Administration at UD, will discuss the challenges of recruiting, training, evaluating and retaining good teachers in public schools.

May 4 -- Shawn Garvin, director of EPA Region III, will discuss policy implications for the states as energy and environmental issues come to the fore.

May 18 - Mark Headd, currently a senior applications developer and formerly director of the Delaware Government Information Center and chief policy and budget adviser for the Delaware Department of Technology, will discuss "The Friendly City Hall."
