McLane, who is serving as 2009-10 president of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), was cited for “her record of accomplishment which has resulted in this designation.”

The tribute reads: “As president of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, she represents more than 10,000 clinical laboratory professionals in the United States who design, perform, and maintain the quality assurance for the billions of laboratory tests needed each year for diagnostic and therapy decisions made by primary care providers.”

McLane's platform as ASCLS president has been to encourage her colleagues to “provide the face” of the lab profession. She was recently invited to submit articles on this topic to two journals, ADVANCE for Medical Laboratory Professionals (January 2010 issue) and Medical Laboratory Observer (February 2010 issue).

Her piece in ADVANCE, “This Year's Expanding Opportunities: Creativity and Passion Push the Profession Forward,” cites a U.S. News and World Report article on healthcare careers that refers to the laboratory profession as being “under the radar.”

“My enthusiasm for the coming year's prospects for our profession focuses on our collective ability to stay 'above the radar,'” she writes. “We fully have it within our power to make 2010 be known as the year everyone discovers this profession.”
