12:08 p.m., Dec. 23, 2009----The University of Delaware Rust Ice Arena has painted its ice green, both as a holiday season celebration and as a way to illustrate the campus' efforts to be more environmentally friendly and go green under President Patrick Harker's Path to ProminenceTM.
James Kaden, manager of the UD ice arenas, says that the idea behind painting the ice green was “to do something fun for the holiday during our special holiday public skating sessions. The Rust Ice Arena is open everyday during the holiday, except for Christmas day.
“After coming up with the idea, I discussed it with my staff, as it is a labor-intensive process,” he says. “Everyone was excited about painting the ice for the holidays. If this is well received, we may look to expand to other events and/or holidays.”
Along with Kaden, the staff employees responsible for painting the ice were Jeff Doucette, ice arena building supervisor, and Eric Nelson and Stas Kukulka, both ice arena service supervisors, as well as some part-time ice arena employees.
Painting of the ice began at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 22, and continued on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 23, for about another 10 hours, making the estimated total time for the project around 15 hours.
The paint used to decorate the ice for the holiday season comes from JetIce, the ice arena's normal ice paint provider.
The ice will remain green through Friday, Jan. 1. After the special New Year's Day public skating session, which will include a live disc jockey, from 1-4 p.m., Jan. 1, Kaden and his staff will begin the process of removing the green ice.
Special holiday skating sessions
Special holiday skating sessions at the Rust Ice Arena are scheduled from 1-3 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 24; 1-3 p.m. and 8-10 p.m., Saturday through Wednesday, Dec. 26-30; from 1-3 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 31; from 1-4 p.m. and 8-10 p.m., Friday, Jan. 1; from 1-3 p.m. and 8-10 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 2; and from 1- 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 3.
