8:08 a.m., Aug. 27, 2009----Sustainability at the University of Delaware is getting simpler with the implementation Sept. 1 of campus-wide Single Stream Recycling by the Facilities Department.
The new program, which is a major overhaul of the University's recycling system, means that recyclable materials will not need to be sorted: UD community members will be able to place all accepted recyclable items into any blue recycling container on campus.
"Single Stream Recycling is a big step forward for recycling at the University," Vic Costa, interim associate vice president for facilities, said. "By making the process simpler, we expect to see increased participation across the campus. Other institutions that have switched have seen an increase in their recycling rates anywhere from 10 to 30 percent."
"A key element of the University's Path to ProminenceTM is the idea that we are committed to incorporating sustainability into our operations," Scott Douglass, executive vice president, said. "Single Stream Recycling is an excellent example of UD's commitment to turning philosophy into action, and it's a great way to get the entire campus involved in this important initiative."
"The Delaware Solid Waste Authority is proud and quite pleased to be partnering again with the University of Delaware and its recycling program," Rich Von Stetten, senior manager of statewide recycling for DSWA, said. "The partnership kicked off last year with UD averaging approximately 25 tons per month of recyclable material collected and recycled. Now that the University has rolled out the next phase of its program, DSWA anticipates that number to easily double. UD plays an integral part in Delaware's recycling efforts and should be commended for its efforts."
Under the new program, a blue recycling container bearing the Single Stream Recyling logo will be placed next to every trash can across the campus, in every residence hall room and in each office.
The following materials may be placed in the blue Single Stream Recycling containers:
- Paper: Newspaper, computer and copier paper, brown paper bags, colored paper, junk mail/envelopes, paper juice boxes, etc.
- Plastic: Plastic bottles, milk jugs, shampoo bottles, empty plastic bags
- Metal: Aluminum cans, food and beverage cans, empty aerosol cans, etc.
- Glass: Clear, green, brown glass containers
Cardboard boxes must be broken down. Food waste and any specialty recycling items, such as electronics, should not be placed in the blue containers.
Individual campus units are responsible for lost or stolen recycling containers, which may be purchased through UDMart, beginning in October.
