11:06 a.m., Aug. 26, 2009----Mary Anne Rarick Early, a University of Delaware alumna and associate professor emerita of nursing, died Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Regional Medical Center of Acadiana in Louisiana.

Ms. Early, 92, was born May 9, 1917. She earned a master's degree in education from the University of Delaware in 1959 and later was a professor of nursing, retiring around 1980. Her name is inscribed on a brick in Mentors' Circle, in honor of the Excellence in Teaching Award she received at UD in 1968.

Ms. Early moved to Abbeville, La., in 1982. She taught at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and was employed at Abbeville General Hospital. She was a volunteer tutor at an elementary school and a student in a senior life writing class sponsored by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Lafayette General Medical Center.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Broussard, and husband Daniel; a daughter-in-law, Kay Early; nine grandchildren, John Broussard, Jeffrey Broussard, Kimberly David, Ann Broussard, Katie Broussard, Tim Early, Patti Trover, Greg Early and Chris Early; three great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Early; a son, James Early; and her parents, John and Olive Burns Rarick.
