University begins search for dean of College of Arts and Sciences

2:33 p.m., Aug. 26, 2009----The University of Delaware has launched a national search for a new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, it was announced Wednesday by Provost Tom Apple.

Apple served as dean of the college from 2005 until July 1, 2009, when he became provost.

George Watson, deputy dean and senior associate dean of natural sciences in the college, is serving as interim dean.

Michael Chajes, dean of the College of Engineering, will serve as chairperson of the search committee.

Committee members are: Paul Amer, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Computer and Information Sciences; Ronet Bachman, professor and chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice; Stephen Bernhardt, Andrew B. Kirkpatrick Jr. Chair in Writing in the Department of English; J.J. Davis, vice president for administration; Randall Duncan, professor and chairperson of the Department of Biological Sciences; Paul Head, professor and chairperson of the Department of Music; James Jones, professor and director of the Black American Studies Program; Jean Laurenceau, associate professor of psychology; Kathleen Matt, dean of the College of Health Sciences; Rudolph Matthee, Distinguished Professor of History; Michael Middaugh, associate provost; and Kathryn Scantlebury, professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

The search committee will seek nominations and applications and organize candidate interviews. It is anticipated their report and recommendations will be made by March, 2010.
