According to Mathieu Plourde, IT-Client Support and Services, since the launch of Sakai@UD in September 2008, IT staff have manually created over 1,000 guest accounts on request to enable external contributors to use course and project sites. Although the guest accounts were regularly created within 24 hours, managing these accounts (who requested them, whether they were still active, etc.) came with some difficulty, Plourde said.

Now any wait to have a guest account created is over.

The Sakai@UD Guest Management System is a password-protected Web service intended to let faculty and staff give access to their Sakai@UD sites to non-University of Delaware people.

By providing a non-University email address (e.g., johndoe@gmail.com) and a name (e.g., John Doe), faculty and staff can create a guest account and add the account to any of their Sakai@UD sites.

The guest management system automatically generates an email message to the guest, eliminating the need to communicate the information individually to each person.

Sponsoring faculty and staff will also be notified once a year to check their currently sponsored guests to decide if they still need to have access or not.

Visit the Sakai@UD Guest Management System support site for more details and FAQs.

It is hoped this initiative will be useful in allowing the University of Delaware community to engage more actively with teachers, researchers, students, and experts from all over the world.

Users are asked to provide feedback on thier experience with the Sakai@UD Guest Management System by taking a short survey.
