At the March 30 statewide Delaware GIS 2010 conference, Sacher received the 2010 Vern Svatos Geographic Community Service Award from the Delaware Geographic Data Committee (DGDC).

Sacher received the award, voted on by members of Delaware's geographic data community, for outstanding service and consistent commitment to the state's geographic community.

“Without Dick Sacher, there would be no Delaware DataMIL (Data Mapping and Integration Laboratory),” said Michael B. Mahaffie, chair of the DGDC and spatial data coordinator for the Delaware Office of State Planning Coordination.

According to Mahaffie, Sacher served as principal investigator in the National Map prototype grant under which DataMIL was developed in 2000 and 2001. In 2003, the Delaware team received the U.S. Geological Survey's John Wesley Powell Award for their development of the DataMIL.

More recently, Sacher has been venue and technical coordinator for the DGDC's annual Delaware GIS conferences, served as its treasurer and is currently statewide academic representative to the DGDC Executive Council. He has been an active member of past GIS conference organizing committees and the statewide GIS community, particularly in the development of statewide and national GIS data and metadata infrastructure.

“Dick Sacher's deep interest in all things mathematical and geographic has made him a natural part, and valued leader, of the Delaware GIS community,” Mahaffie said.
