The five institutions included Georgetown University, Rutgers University, Towson University, the University of Delaware and the University of Pennsylvania.

Library residency programs provide early career development and professional work experience for new librarians with graduate degrees from programs accredited by the American Library Association.

Research library residency programs serve to recruit new librarians from underrepresented groups and create professional opportunities in specializations such as science, law, and health science librarianship.
