9:18 a.m., April 7, 2010----Elizabeth D'Addio, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware, has been selected to participate in the Leadership Skills Workshop sponsored by the Council for Chemical Research (CCR). The workshop will be held on April 18 in conjunction with CCR's 31st Annual Meeting in Atlanta.
The workshop is aimed at enhancing students' professional development by giving them an opportunity to improve their leadership skills, interact with research leaders from industry, academia, and government, and be exposed to high-level discussions about important national research issues. Participants will serve as facilitators in the meeting's breakout sessions, providing them with hands-on experience in meeting facilitation and direct involvement in the discussion of the most current and important chemical research topics.
Students selected for the program receive travel funds to pay for meeting registration, airfare, and lodging. Participants also have the opportunity to attend all aspects of the three-day meeting, including plenary sessions, parallel breakout sessions, award ceremonies, meals, and social events.
D'Addio's post-graduation plans include taking on project leadership roles in industry.
“While I look forward to the challenge of motivating an interdisciplinary team,” she says, “I have little experience in this area because of the solitary nature of much of my graduate work. My hope is that while continuing to hone my interpersonal skills on a professional level, I will learn techniques in the Leadership Skills Workshop to help me be effective as a leader in my future career.”
After earning her bachelor's degree in chemical engineering at Villanova University, D'Addio chose UD's doctoral program because of her strong interest in catalysis. Her research focuses on ammonia decomposition catalysts as a means to generate hydrogen for fuel cells.
The theme of this year's CCR meeting is “The Business of Purification: Critical Challenges, Responsible Solutions.”
