9:27 a.m., April 5, 2010----The University of Delaware's Agriculture Alumni Association recognized outstanding students and industry professionals at the annual Ag Social held in March at Dover Downs. The recipients of these awards were honored by faculty and alumni of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR).

The recipients of the 2010 Donald F. Crossan Agriculture Alumni Scholarship are Hillary Gibson of Middletown, Del., and Simone Chew-Chin of Westford, Mass. This award is given annually to a current sophomore or junior in CANR and honors the former dean who served from 1977 to 1991. The students who received this award demonstrate academic excellence and leadership capabilities.

Gibson is a sophomore natural resource management and plant science double major. She is a member of Phi Sigma Pi, the co-ed honor fraternity, and Circle K service club. She works two on-campus jobs and made dean's list during the 2008-2009 academic year. In the future, Gibson aspires to be an organic farmer and expand her knowledge of sustainability, pest management, and plant science.

Chew-Chin is a junior animal science major with a pre-veterinary concentration. She was a barn assistant at Flying Change Stables and currently works at UD's Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research. She is also a member of the Horticulture Club and the secretary of the Animal Science Club. Chew-Chin plans to attend veterinary school and ultimately become a large animal veterinarian.

The George M. Worrilow Award honors a CANR alumnus who has made significant contributions in an agriculture related field. Worrilow was the dean of CANR from 1954 to 1965. Past honorees include educators and other industry leaders.

The recipient of the 2010 Worrilow award is Robert Baker of Odessa, Del., who graduated from UD with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture in 1971. He has been the owner and operator of Baker Farms, Inc. which produces corn, soybeans, and wheat. To name a few of his many accomplishments, Baker has served on the Delaware Farm Bureau, the Legislative Task Force for Delaware Agriculture, and is currently a member of the Delaware Soybean Board.

“During my time in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, I got a lot of hands on experience that made me extremely eager to learn and pursue a career in agriculture. I feel extremely honored to have received this prestigious award,” said Baker.
