8:56 p.m., Sept. 22, 2008----In a relatively short period of time, the term “sustainability” has entered the lexicon of nearly every department on campus. A panel of experts from a wide range of academic disciplines will assemble to discuss what they see as the critical sustainability issues facing their field or industry at a forum slated for from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, September 23, in Clayton Hall.

Special attention will be given to the future of sustainability efforts in each area and the implications for students' future career plans.

Panelists include:

• Janet Hethorn, professor and chairperson, Department of Art, and co-author of Sustainable Fashion: Why Now?;
• David Legates, associate professor of geography, Delaware's state climatologist, has testified in the U.S. Senate on the weakness of scientific evidence for climate change;
• Willett Kempton, associate professor of marine and Earth sciences, pioneering researcher on alternative energy sources, including the use of electric-drive vehicles as a source of power for utilities (V2G: Vehicle to Grid Power);
• S. Ismat Shah, professor of materials science, advocate for injecting moral and ethical issues into the discussion of technology-driven sustainability efforts;
• Wendy Smith, assistant professor of business administration, advocate for injecting social and environmental considerations into the financial decision-making of for-profit firms;
• Bill Sullivan, managing director of the Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware hotel, pioneer in the Delaware Green Lodging Program.

There will be breakout sessions immediately following the panel discussion.
