4:08 p.m., Sept. 10, 2008----UD's Area Studies Programs are sponsoring a lecture series this semester with the title "Border Crossings: Culture, Politics and the Arts." The lectures are held from 12:30-1:20 p.m. on Thursdays in 303 Gore Hall and are open to the public.
The lecture series includes:
- Sept. 11, “Beautiful Deformities: The Mermaid Metaphor in Latin American Literature,” by Persephone Braham, assistant professor, Foreign Languages and Literatures and Latin American Studies at UD;
- Sept. 18, “A Diffusion Effect? Women in Parliaments in East and Southern Africa,” by Gretchen Bauer, chairperson and professor of political science and international relations;
- Sept. 25, “Voices Without Borders: Delaware's Voice for Hispanics,” by Guillermina Gonzalez, director, Voces Sin Fronteras, Delaware's advocacy organization for Hispanics;
- Oct. 2, “Migration to Europe: Past, Present and Future,” by Mark Miller, Emma Smith Morris Professor, political science and international relations;
- Oct. 9, “Smokestacks and Steeples: The French-Canadian Diaspora 1840-1940,” by Cynthia Lees, assistant professor, foreign languages and literatures;
