12:20 p.m., Nov. 24, 2008----The University of Delaware men's rowing club had its best performance in team history Saturday, Nov. 8, at the annual Frostbite Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The Frostbite Regatta was the final race of the team's 2008 fall schedule, and featured races of 2,000 meters in length.
The racing began with a win by the junior varsity eights, crossing the line in 6:05.3. The University of Pennsylvania finished second, with a time of 6:11.08, and Drexel University finished third, with a time of 6:12.39.
The freshmen/novice lightweight eights A team held off St. Joseph's University and Drexel for the win by five and six seconds, respectively.
The freshmen/novice heavyweight A crew finished third in their event. The freshmen/novice C boat finished first and the D entry took second ahead of Ithaca.
“I am excited to see the progress our novices have made this year from the first fall race to the last,” said Joe Kleiman, the freshman/novice coach.
After leading the entire race, the varsity lightweight eights crossed the line in 6:23.88, ahead of St. Joseph's, which came in at 6:27.07. Marietta College clocked in at 6:34.91 and Penn finished with a time of 6:41.64.
To earn their second gold medal of the weekend, the junior varsity eights crossed the line over 37 seconds ahead of second place Penn, which came in at 7:14.48, and over 42 seconds ahead of Loyola, finishing at 7:19.70, and Lafayette, finishing with a time of 7:21.17.
In the final race of the day, the UD varsity heavyweight eights came back from third place at the halfway mark to take first place in 6:09.33. They defeated Temple, which came in at 6:12.64, Drexel, which finished with a time of 6:14.35, Penn, finishing with a time of 6:22.52, St. Joseph's, finishing with a time of 6:24.82, and Colgate University, which finished with a time of 6:25.41.
"I am very pleased with the results of the program at the Frostbite Regatta," said UD head coach Chuck Crawford. "Once again we demonstrated that our men's club team can compete and win against varsity programs with ample funding".
