3:15 p.m., Nov. 19, 2008----The annual University of Delaware Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5, in the auditorium of Clayton Hall on the Laird Campus.
The event will feature a lecture by M.K. Asante Jr., professor, filmmaker and award-winning author, and the electrifying Universal African Dance and Drum Ensemble. There also will be a Kwanzaa feast.
Showcased will be the film "The Black Candle," which was directed by Asante and narrated by Maya Angelou. The film features an all-star cast from the hip hop and civil rights generations who explore and celebrate why the seven principles of Kwanzaa -- unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith -- are so important to African Americans today. It traces the holiday's growth out of the Black Power Movement of the 1960s to its present day reality as a global, pan-African holiday embraced by more than 40 million celebrants.
The lecture and performance is free. The feast is free to University of Delaware students, faculty and staff members, but there is a $15 charge for those not part of the campus community. People who plan to attend must RSVP by Tuesday, Dec. 2. To RSVP, contact the Center for Black Culture at (302) 831-2991 or send e-mail to [slw@udel.edu].
The event is sponsored by the Center for Black Culture, the Cultural Programming Advisory Board, the Black Student Union, Each One Reach One mentoring program and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
