9:17 a.m., Nov. 21, 2008----Yonggang Huang, Joseph Cummings Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University, has been selected to deliver the 2008 Nowinski Lecture at the University of Delaware at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 5, in Room 106 of the Composites Manufacturing Science Laboratory.
The lecture series was initiated in 1975 in honor of the late Jerzy L. Nowinski, who was H. Fletcher Brown Professor at the University of Delaware from 1961 to 1973 and is recognized for his contributions to applied mechanics. Each year, one outstanding individual in this field is invited to present a lecture in the series.
Huang's lecture will address the mechanics of stretchable electronics, an area that has applications in flexible displays, digital cameras, sensors and drive electronics for artificial muscles, and “wrap-around” structural monitors for aircraft wings.
Silicon, the most widely used semiconductor material, is intrinsically brittle and not stretchable. Huang and his colleagues have produced a stretchable form of silicon as well as stretchable circuits. Based on this new approach, they have made the first electronic-eye camera, reported in Nature, and a flexible silicon solar cell, documented in Nature Materials.
Huang's research has been reported not only in a book and some 270 papers in refereed journals but also by a number of popular media, including ABC, BBC, Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, Reuters, United Press International, and US News & World Report.
His papers are highly cited, and he has been the recipient of a number of awards and honors, including the Larson Memorial Award in 2003 and the Melville Medal in 2004, both from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008.
For more information about the event, contact Betty Bonavita at [Bonavita@udel.edu] or call (302) 831-6975.
