12:10 p.m., Nov. 25, 2008----On Thursday, Dec. 4, the University of Delaware Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships will begin its Entrepreneur in Residence program with a campus visit by William G. Mavity, a University alumnus and president, chief executive officer and director of Paracor Medical.
Paracor Medical is an innovative medical device company focused on providing unique, technology-driven solutions for the treatment of heart failure. Last year, Paracor received $44.3 million in Series D funding.
The Entrepreneur in Residence program is designed to create entrepreneurial excitement among undergraduates.
The distinguished appointment brings successful entrepreneurs to the UD campus to spend one or two days working with individual and small groups of students who would like to learn the ins and outs of establishing a commercial enterprise.
While on campus, Mavity will discuss entrepreneurship during a lunch presentation with students, participate in a roundtable discussion and have office hours at the University's Venture Development Center in Purnell Hall. He also will speak at 11:45 a.m. in the conference room of the Center for Composite Materials.
Mavity joined Paracor Medical in 2003.
From 2001 to 2003, he served as president, CEO and a director of Cohesion Technologies, a publicly traded biomaterials company that was acquired by Angiotech Pharmaceuticals in January, 2003, for more than $42 million.
In 2001, Dr. Mavity led the spinout and initial organization and funding of Biosurface Engineering Technologies as its chairman, CEO and director.
He holds a bachelor of engineering administration degree from the University of Delaware, graduating in 1972, and did graduate study in business administration at Rider College and Furman University. He also served as an officer in the U. S. Army Reserve, Corps of Engineers, from 1973 until 1983. From 1972 until 1993, Dr. Mavity served in various operations and general management roles with the 3M Company, including heading its cardiovascular subsidiary.
In addition to his role as a director at Paracor Medical, Mavity currently serves as the chairman of the board of Biosurface Engineering Technologies and as a director of USGI Medical. He has previously served on the boards of Cohesion Technologies, InnerDyne, Cardeon, AMed Sytems, Aspire Medical, Fidus Medical Technologies, NeuColl and the Michigan Technology Council. He also serves on the Advisory Council for the College of Engineering at the University of Delaware.
The University of Delaware Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships serves as a gateway to enable entrepreneurship and innovation by leveraging the University's knowledge-based assets in partnership with industry, government and other academic institutions.
