2:04 p.m., May 7, 2009----Frank S. Bates, Regents Professor and head of chemical engineering and materials science at the University of Minnesota, will deliver the Kurt Wohl Memorial Lecture at 10 a.m., Friday, May 15, in 102/103 Colburn Laboratory.

The lecture is sponsored by the University of Delaware's Department of Chemical Engineering.

Bates will speak on the topic “Block Copolymers: Designer Materials at Commodity Prices.”

Bates conducts research on a range of topics related to polymers, with a particular focus on the thermodynamics and dynamics of block copolymters and blends.

He received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the State University of New York at Albany and master's and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Bates was a technical staff member at AT&T Bell Laboratories before joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and has received both the Dillon Medal and the Polymer Physics Prize, both from the American Physical Society, where he is a fellow. He also was named the recipient of a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award.
