9:29 a.m., May 13, 2009----Over the past few years, the world of education has changed significantly as more teaching combines traditional face-to-face classes with online opportunities. Web-based communication has exploded, in large part, by the emergence and increased popularity of social networking web sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

What are the implications of social networking to education? And how are educators using social networks to not only engage their students but also connect with each other?

Find answers to the growing number of questions about social networking and education at the closing event of UD's 2009 Summer Faculty Institute.

On Friday, June 5, keynote speaker Alec Couros will present “Harnessing the Power of Social Networks in Teaching and Learning.” His session, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Multipurpose Room A of the Trabant University Center, will address these questions and inspire you to explore social networking personally and for teaching.

Couros, professor of educational technology and media and the coordinator of information and communications technology at the faculty of education, University of Regina, is a scholar and advocate of openness in distributed learning environments. He has given hundreds of workshops and presentations, nationally and internationally, on topics such as openness in education, social/networked learning, instructional design, digital citizenship and critical media literacy.

Couros is actively engaged in social networks as both an educator and a participant. A graduate level professor in the University of Regina's Faculty of Education, his coursework focuses on how educators can best use these tools to reach their educational objectives. He blogs at this site.

All members of the campus community are invited to attend the keynote presentation.

Registration is free, but required. Space is limited, so early registration is advised. Register online at this Web site.

The Summer Faculty Institute is sponsored by the Office of Information Technologies-Academic Technology Services in partnership with other campus units and departments.
