8:34 a.m., May 18, 2009----Beginning Aug. 3, the University of Delaware Library will implement a pay-for-print model for printing from all 200 public computers in the Morris Library and at the branch libraries in Newark, Del.
The use of and associated costs for public printing in the library have increased sharply, making this step necessary. Printing is also an environmental sustainability issue, and the current system of printing at no charge has resulted in unnecessary printing and waste. The change in policy is consistent with practice at other university libraries.
University of Delaware students, faculty and staff will be able to use their UD1/FLEX cards (UD ID card) to pay for printing in the Morris Library locations where printers are currently available. Value may be added to the UD1/FLEX card at the Student Multimedia Design Center desk or at the self-service “value transfer station” on the Lower Level of the Morris Library.
The print charges will be consistent with other University of Delaware computing sites at 5 cents per page for single-sided printing, and 4 cents per side for double-sided printing. The price will remain consistent with University-wide prices in the future. UD students will be able to take advantage of the existing University policy, which provides 100 free copies per semester for printing from UD1/FLEX cards as part of printing policy. Printing from DELCAT, the library online catalog, will continue to be at no charge.
University of Delaware departments may obtain a department UD1/FLEX card through the UD1/FLEX Office, and arrange to add departmental funds to that card by contacting Kathy Phelps at the UD1/FLEX Office at [phelps@udel.edu] or (302) 831-4033.
Members of the public without University of Delaware ID cards can pay for printing by purchasing a blank Library Copy Card for $1 at the Student Multimedia Design Center service desk on the Lower Level of the Morris Library. Value may be added to the card at Student Multimedia Design Center service desk or at the self-service value transfer station on the Lower Level. The current Library Copy Cards were introduced in August 2008, and have a color image of the Library on the card, use the FLEX system and may also be used for Library photocopying. Dispensers with $5 Library Copy Cards are on each floor of the Morris Library.
