1:49 p.m., May 28, 2009----Barbara K. Martin who worked in both the engineering office and the Faculty Senate office at the University of Delaware, died May 23, at the Heartland Hospice, with her family at her side. She was 74.

Born in Poinette, Wisc., she grew up in Portage, Wisc., and graduated from Portage High. She earned her bachelor's degree in English from Carroll College and married Ronald Martin of Chicago in 1956. She continued her education at Boston University and the University of Delaware in literature, journalism and art. She practiced painting and worked in the physics office in Boston before coming to Delaware. She lived for extended periods in Boston; Cambridge in the United Kingdom; Vienna, Austria; Odense, Denmark; and permanently in Newark, Del.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald, who is professor emeritus of English at UD; her daughter, Kathleen Beicht, of Salem-Neufrach, Germany; her son, Christopher, of Portland, Ore.; her daughter, Susan, of Cullowhee, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
