2:16 p.m., May 12, 2009----Students interested in serving as mentors for the Latino Enrichment And Resource Network (LEARN) Mentoring Program for the 2009-2010 academic year are being sought by the University of Delaware Student Centers.
The LEARN program will support new students in their adjustment to college by pairing upperclassmen with incoming students. The program and its mentors will help them acclimate to campus, meet other students of similar backgrounds and interest, as well as foster a sense of belonging.
The program also provides an important link to academic support services and campus resources. It encourages leadership and professional development and promotes the multitude of opportunities to get involved in extracurricular activities through awareness of campus events, student organizations, support programs and student life.
Past program activities have included workshops on a variety of topics, including time management, academic support services, alcohol awareness, career services, study abroad programs and more.
Students also had the opportunity to participate in socials, off-campus trips to Six Flags theme park and Washington, D.C., and to utilize private study rooms.
To qualify as a mentor, all full time undergraduate students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Latino heritage
- Major/Minor in Latin related studies
- Interested in learning about Latino culture and/or supporting the Latino community on the University campus
- Member of Latino student organization or Greek chapter
- Participated in a study abroad program to a Latin American/Spanish country
Students interested in getting more information about the LEARN Mentoring Program, including information on how to apply to be a mentor, are invited to attend an interest meeting at 4 p.m., Monday, May 18, in Room 206 of the Trabant University Center.
