8:35 a.m., May 8, 2009----A book belonging to the University of Delaware Library, Galileo Galilei, La operazione dell compass geometric, et militare ... (Padua, 1640), has been loaned from the Special Collections Department to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia for the exhibition "Galileo, the Medici and the Age of Astronomy," which runs through Sept. 7.
Although Galileo did not invent the telescope -- credit for this goes to early-17th century Dutch spectacle makers -- his innovative use of this new scientific instrument and the discoveries he made with it changed the face of modern science.
The year 2009 marks the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of the telescope to make astronomical observations and is being celebrated as the International Year of Astronomy.
The bulk of items included in the exhibition has come from Italy and was installed by a team of Italian exhibition designers and carpenters.
Other American lenders to the exhibition include the University of Pennsylvania; the Linda Hall Library in Kansas City, Kansas; the Philosophical Society in Philadelphia; and Temple University.
