8:30 a.m., March 26, 2009----Special Olympics Delaware is participating in a national Spread the Word to End the Word campaign designed to get people to pledge to stop using the “R-word” -- the derogatory and outdated term “retarded” and all forms of it.

Delaware organizations joining Special Olympics Delaware in the effort are Arc of Delaware, Best Buddies, the Delaware Foundation for Reaching Citizens with Intellectual Disabilities (DFRC), Down Syndrome Association of Delaware and United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware.

The coalition is asking the University of Delaware community to join in the effort, and UD students are being asked to take the pledge and sign their names to a banner on Tuesday, April 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Trabant University Center. There will be speakers and educational materials. Rachel Simon, author of Riding the Bus with my Sister, will attend the event to talk about her experience growing up with a sister who has an intellectual disability.

In case of inclement weather, the event will take place inside the Trabant University Center in the food court.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Spread the Word to End the Word event, send e-mail to [cgm@udel.edu].
