11:41 a.m., March 23, 2009----Nicole Minni, a policy specialist in the University of Delaware's Institute for Public Administration (IPA) in the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy, received first place in the professional map gallery category at the 2009 Towson University Geographic Information Systems (TUgis) Conference on March 18.

Her winning poster is titled “A Digital Based Watershed Atlas for Sussex County, Delaware.” This is the third time in the past five years that Minni has captured a first place award at this regional GIS conference.

This year's poster showed each of the separate watersheds in Sussex County and included six detail maps of the Wagamon's Pond watershed, which is situated roughly between Georgetown and Milton, illustrating its natural, cultural and economic resources.

Minni makes light of her frequency on the awards podium at TUgis, saying, “I keep waiting for them to change the rules about free registration to next year's conference for award winners.”

She took first place in the professional map gallery category in 2005 and 2006 and second place in 2007 and 2008. She had also taken two first place awards for separate posters back in 2000.

As a GIS specialist, Minni has developed many GIS maps for IPA projects, local governments and civic groups. She has been recognized for her work in digital cartography and spatial analysis and has completed many diverse mapping projects, ranging from the “State of Delaware National Wetlands Inventory Map” to “Municipal Mapping for Livable Delaware.”

Minni is also involved in Delaware K-12 schools, leading student workshops and projects that demonstrate the usefulness of digital data as a tool.

Last year Minni received the 2008 Geographic Community Service Award at the annual Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Conference in April in Dover. She works at the University of Delaware's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes.
