Richard Wool, professor of chemical engineering, and Erman Senoz, a doctoral student, were featured in June 23 stories in The Daily Green, Science Now and the Newark Post about research on the use of waste chicken feathers to store hydrogen for fuel cells. They reported their research findings at the 13th annual Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference held June 23-25 in College Park, Md., by the American Chemical Society. Also, Wool was featured June 26 on the National Public Radio Science Friday program concerning the research. The Science Friday Web site offers options for listening to the program, including radio stations with online presence and podcasts.

Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, H. Rodney Sharp Professor of Educational Studies and an expert on children's play, was quoted in a June 25 Newsweek story about the economic downturn and declining enrollment at summer camps. With more time for free play, Golinkoff said “the economic downturn might be the best thing that ever happened to kids."

Ruth Flexman, program coordinator with UD's Academy of Lifelong Learning, was featured in a June 25 Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal story about her workshop offering new ideas for creative mental stimulation among older adults.

Tom Apple, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences soon to become provost, was featured in an interview June 24 on WHYY-TV's Delaware Tonight. The interview focused on the University's strategic plan and Apple's plans as provost.

Bill McGowan, a UD Cooperative Extension community development agent, was quoted in a June 24 Bethany Beach Wave story about the Heart and Soul of Sussex program, which kicked off in 2008 and recently held a town hall meeting in Georgetown to share ideas about the county's unique identity.

Michelle Provost-Craig, associate professor of exercise physiology, Kat Arbour, a doctoral student, and Tom Kepple, researcher in the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, were quoted in a feature article on the science of figure skating and the University of Delaware's contributions to that field in the June 23 issue of The New York Times. The article also cited Jim Richards, associate dean of the College of Health Sciences and Distinguished Professor of Health and Exercise Sciences, and figure skater Melissa Bulanhagui, who trains at UD's Ice Skating Science Development Center.

Willett Kempton, associate professor of marine policy, was cited in a June 23 McClatchy-Tribune Information Service story about wind energy projects.

Todor Stanev, professor of physics and astronomy, was quoted in a June 23 Science News story about cosmic rays, as new research suggests that many of the highest-energy particles are iron nuclei rather than protons.

Bethany Hall-Long, professor of nursing and a state senator, was quoted in a June 23 News Journal story about legislation she sponsored to limit the use of tanning beds by teenagers and children. The bill is named after the late Michelle Rigney, a UD student who died at age 22 from melanoma.

Ndongo Ndiaye, a UD alumnus and former Blue Hen basketball player, was featured in a June 23 Associated Press story about his efforts to promote basketball as a means to education and success in his native Senegal. "Basketball helped me to have an education, see new things, travel, make a little bit of money," Ndiaye told AP, "and the best thing I can do with that is come back here and help."

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a June 23 Associated Press story and a June 22 Bloomberg News story about reports that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had a liver transplant. “In the interests of transparency, I think it would be necessary for them to disclose something as serious as a liver transplant,” Elson told Bloomberg. “Investors want to know if he's healthy and if he can continue to run the company.”

Elson also was quoted in a June 21 News Journal story on the Delaware Court of Chancery and in a June 21 St. Louis Post-Dispatch column on a “pay czar.”

Michela Taufer, assistant professor of computer and information sciences, was quoted in a June 22 Scientific American story about UD's Docking@Home project, through which you can donate your computer's idle time for use in leading-edge research. “Even without large resources of supercomputers, we can do meaningful research with the help of volunteers across the Internet,” Taufer said.

Scott Sweren, an information security officer in IT-Network and Systems Services, was quoted in a June 22 IT World story about anti-piracy provisions of the Higher Education Opportunity Act.

UD's experimental guest room in Marriott's Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware hotel on campus was featured June 22 on Philadelphia's NBC10.

Jeff Fitts, a UD graduate, was featured in a June 21 Crain's New York Business story on restructuring professionals.

Rob Palkovitz, professor of human development and family studies and an expert on fathering, was featured in a June 21 WHYY Father's Day story.

Lance Winn, assistant professor of art, was featured in a Philadelphia The Artblog posting of June 17, in which he discussed the University's presence in the city's Crane Arts Building through the UD@Crane program.

Alvina Quintana, associate professor of women's studies, was featured in a May 18 Hispanic Outlook story that focused on Latina writers and American literature.
