12:31 p.m., June 5, 2009----UD in the News provides a roundup of recent news items about the University of Delaware, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.
Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a June 5 story in The New York Times concerning the ousting of the chief risk officer by Bank of America. “The buck stops with the CEO, and if the risks are realized, it's ultimately the CEO's responsibility,” Elson told the Times. Also, Elson was cited in a June 4 CNN Money story about banking institutions and government regulators, suggesting regulators might seek changes in boards rather than in top management.
Muqtedar Khan, associate professor of political science and international relations and director of the Islamic Studies Program, wrote an opinion piece June 5 for Middle East Online concerning President Barack Obama's address from Cairo. “Never has an American president spoken with such eloquence, compassion, understanding and empathy to the Muslim World,” Khan wrote.
Corey Whaley, Cooperative Extension specialist, was quoted in a June 5 News Journal story about the rain that has made life difficult for farmers and businesses in Southern Delaware.
Nancy Targett, dean of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, was featured in a June 4 Delaware Coast Press story about threats to coastal areas.
Harry Shipman, Annie Jump Cannon Professor of Astronomy, and Judi Provencal, assistant professor of physics and astronomy at UD and director of the Delaware Asteroseismic Research Center, were quoted in a June 3 News Journal story about the Whole Earth Telescope project. “You're part of this worldwide consortium that's doing exciting stuff," Shipman said. Provencal also was featured in a May 31 WHYY Health and Science story about the Whole Earth Telescope project.
Elena Delle Donne, a UD scholar-athlete, was cited in stories June 2 and June 3 in the News Journal, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Hartford (Conn.) Courant, USA Today, the Sporting News, Comcast and the Washington Post after announcing plans to play basketball for the Fightin' Blue Hens.
Christopher Christie, a UD political science alumnus, was featured widely in regional media, including The New York Times, the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger and the Philadelphia Inquirer, after he won the Republican Party's primary election and will now run for governor of New Jersey.
B.J. DeCoursey, policy specialist for the Institute for Public Administration, and Michael Peterson, professor of health, nutrition and exercise sciences, were quoted in a June 2 News Journal story on livability and exercise opportunities. IPA and the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences are working together to make communities pedestrian friendly. "What you want to do is create a community atmosphere that will allow people to exercise by accident," DeCoursey told the newspaper.
James Corbett, associate professor of marine policy, was cited in a June 2 Autoblog posting and also in a Hungarian publication about ship emissions.
William J. Ullman, professor of marine and earth studies, was quoted in a June 1 News Journal story and a June 4 Delaware Coast Press story about plans by Lewes and the University's Sea Grant College Program to study the feasibility of a solar utility for the community.
Lisa Chieffo, associate director of the Center for International Studies, was featured in a June 1 Inside Higher Ed story about research on short-term study abroad presented at an NSFSA: Association of International Educators conference held in Los Angeles.
Amy Foley, senior associate director of admissions, Avi Amon, admissions counselor, and Amber Walkup, a UD student, were quoted in a May 30 News Journal story about the University's Visitors Center, which recently was cited as having among the best restrooms in higher education by TargetX, a marketing firm.
James Butkiewicz, professor of economicas, was quoted in a May 20 Newsday story about legislation to legalize sports betting in Delaware. "The thing we do know from Nevada," Butkiewicz said, "is there are 184 locations where you can bet on sports, and the total revenue generated by sports betting is only 1.2 percent of their gaming revenue."_He added, “There's this myth that if you get sports gamblers to come to Delaware to bet, they'll bet more on the slots. The academic literature on this says that crossover effect is practically zero."
Leslie F.Goldstein, Judge Hugh M. Morris Professor of Political Science, appeared May 8 on WHYY-TV's Delaware Tonight as a member of a Friday Forum panel on Supreme Court appointments. Among other remarks, she correctly predicted the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor by President Barack Obama.
