4:16 p.m., June 16, 2009----Beginning this week, the northbound lanes of the Summit Bridge and its approaches, between Delaware Route 71 and Bethel Church Road, are closed for construction, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced.

The work could add to the drive times for University of Delaware faculty and staff who commute to the Newark campus from south of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.

The Corps is initiating the second phase of a project that began in April 2008 to remove and completely rebuild the approaches, which are the concrete roadways leading to and from the bridge in both directions. Phase one, the replacement of the southbound approaches, was completed last week.

While the two northbound lanes are closed, all traffic will use the two southbound lanes, with one lane reserved for each direction. Replacement of the northbound approaches is expected to be complete by early 2010, at which point the bridge will be fully reopened to two lanes in each direction.
