The institute is designed to teach leadership concepts and skills, and to help participants evaluate personal strengths, refine communication skills, build inclusive and successful teams, implement action plans, and lead with integrity.

The program at the University of Delaware, which has 27 participants, is one of more than 80 campus-based institutes held in 2009. Other universities that will host LeaderShape include Clemson University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin Madison.

“We are very pleased to offer LeaderShape to students at the University of Delaware. It is a program with a proven record in building leadership skills, and it is being offered at a growing number of the nation's top colleges and universities,” said Michael Gilbert, vice president for student life.

The Champaign, Ill.-based LeaderShape Institute has received praise from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which released a report that reviewed its grant-making activity in the area of youth leadership programming during 1990-98. During that time period, LeaderShape received two different grants from the foundation to support the growth of campus-based sessions and was recognized as one of the "exemplary programs" the foundation funded.
