3:48 p.m., June 29, 2009----Cynthia Campanella, director of alumni and University relations at the University of Delaware, is the first recipient of the Recognizing Everyday Greatness Award, which is being presented by Spike's Trophies four times each year to recognize people who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist in the betterment and well-being of their communities.

Campanella was honored during a special presentation at noon, Monday, June 29, at Alumni Hall. The award was presented by Spike, The Loving Cup mascot from Spike's Trophies.

Campanella earned the award specifically for spearheading a private graduation ceremony for a student in the College of Education and Public Policy whose mother may not have been able to attend otherwise due to the diagnosis of a serious illness. Working with the college, Campanella set up a private graduation ceremony in which Michael Gamel-McCormick, then interim dean, and a professor and an admissions representative spoke on the graduate's behalf.

Dressed in cap and gown, the graduate was presented with her diploma and flowers, all of which were provided by the University.

“This act of kindness allowed a family to experience one of their proudest moments that, without the help of Cynthia Campanella, they may never have had the opportunity,” a representative of Spike's Trophies said in a statement about the award.
