1:12 p.m., June 8, 2009----Gardening is the number one leisure activity in the U.S. but that doesn't mean all who garden are horticultural whizzes. Good gardeners are made, not born, through education and trial and error.
Delaware Master Gardeners can't help you with the trial and error part but they can give you the education you need to improve that green thumb.
Annual open houses at the Master Gardener demonstration gardens in New Castle and Sussex counties offer opportunities to learn about vegetable gardening, accessible gardening for those with limited mobility, children's gardening, native plants and more.
In New Castle County, the Master Gardeners host an open house on Thursday, July 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the county office in Newark. This free event includes a guided walk through the native plant and vegetable gardens and the compost demonstration site.
Plus, Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and give you ideas to help solve your gardening challenges.
In Sussex, the Master Gardeners hold their open house Saturday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the demonstration garden in Georgetown. Bring plant problems to the plant clinic and ask Master Gardeners your gardening questions.
A special emphasis this year will be accessible gardening; visitors will find great ideas for accessible gardening throughout the demonstration garden.
Special advice also will be available for those who are new to Delaware and are accustomed to gardening in other regions. And for the kids, there is a new Peter Rabbit's garden in the Children's Garden.
Delaware Master Gardeners is a program of University of Delaware and Delaware State University Cooperative Extension. The New Castle County Cooperative Extension office is located at 461 Wyoming Road in Newark. Call (302) 831-COOP for more information. The Sussex County Cooperative Extension office is located at 16483 County Seat Highway in Georgetown. Call (302) 856-7303 for more information.
