4:01 p.m., June 11, 2009----As part of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, on Monday, June 15, folks are encouraged to take the night off from cooking and dine out to help fight elder abuse. Dine Out to End Elder Abuse will take place at several area restaurants.
Millions of elders are abused, neglected and exploited every year. But the problem remains a silent one.
The Clearinghouse on Abuse and Neglect of the Elderly at the University of Delaware (CANE-UD) and the Delaware Division of Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities are teaming up for the second year in a row to sponsor this event.
A portion of the bill from the following restaurants will be donated to elder abuse awareness activities:
Lamberti's Cucina (lunch and dinner)
-Prices Corner
-Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington
Soffritto Italian Grill (dinner)
-Kirkwood Highway, Newark
Grotto Pizza (dinner)*
-Main Street, Newark
-Concord Pike, Wilmington
-Fairfax Shopping Center, Wilmington
*A voucher is required at Grotto, and it is available online.
To make an even more visible statement of support, everyone is urged to wear purple on June 15.
"Elder abuse is everyone's problem, and we all have a role to play in increasing awareness and prevention," said Karen Stein, director of CANE-UD, which is based at the University of Delaware Center for Community Research and Service in the School of Urban Affairs. The University of Delaware has been a leader in elder abuse information and prevention efforts for more than 20 years and is currently the co-manager of the Administration on Aging's National Center on Elder Abuse.
