8:11 a.m., June 9, 2009----The Association for Biology Laboratory Education will hold its 31st annual conference June 9-13 at the University of Delaware, with the event hosted by organization members from UD's Department of Biological Sciences.
More than 170 college faculty and laboratory professionals from throughout North America are expected to attend the conference, which serves as a forum for the exchange of ideas to improve the undergraduate biology laboratory experience.
The conference will feature major workshops, mini-workshops, excursions, poster presentations, demonstrations, exhibits and poster presentations.
A major workshop Wednesday will consider “Podcasts in Biology Laboratory Education” and will be presented by Paul Hyde, manager in IT-User Services at UD. Participants will use UD's Student Multimedia Design Center, located in the Morris Library, to develop podcast projects.
Also Wednesday, UD's Seung M. Hong and Gary Laverty will present a workshop on “Fundulus Melanophones: From Physiology to Cell Biology.” Hong is assistant professor and laboratory coordinator in the Department of Biological Sciences and Laverty is associate professor of biological sciences.
A major workshop Thursday will consider “The Nature of Science.” Presenter will be Joseph D. Maness of Southwestern Oklahoma State University. On Friday, Robert Ketcham, laboratory coordinator in UD's Department of Biological Sciences will offer a mini-workshop entitled “Natural Selection: A Simple Model of Selection in a Variable Environment.”
Robert Hodson, UD associate professor of biological sciences, is serving as the main host, assisted by Ketcham and Linda Dion, instructor of biological sciences, and other faculty and professional staff from the department.
