4:04 p.m., Jan. 12, 2009----The University of Delaware Intercollegiate Figure Skating Competition will be held Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Fred Rust and Gold ice arenas on campus. Competition will begin at 8 a.m.
The event is hosted by the University of Delaware Collegiate Skating Club and sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating.
In addition to host Delaware, top teams expected to compete include Cornell University, Dartmouth College and Boston University.
Also competing will be teams from the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State University, University of Vermont, Northeastern University, West Virginia University, Colgate University, Syracuse University and the University of Rhode Island.
Melissa Pearl is president of the UD Collegiate Figure Skating Club and Kandis Kovalsky is vice president. The coaches are Joel McKeever and Scott Gregory.
"Since our last big win in October at Cornell University, we have continued to stay focused and train hard, for we know that the competition is really tight between us, Cornell, Dartmouth and Boston University,” Kovalsky said.
She added, “Only three teams from the East Coast qualify for nationals in April, and there are four teams fighting for those spots. Our goal is, of course, to win again on our home turf, in addition to earning a spot at nationals in April. We know all the other teams are going to come back fighting even harder than before, and we are prepared to be the best we can be as a team.”
