9:17 a.m., Feb. 9, 2009----The Academic Enrichment Center (AEC) is offering a set of workshops for the spring semester designed to help students master the essential college skills of time management, note-taking, reading and study strategies, test-taking and preparation for finals.
The hour-long workshops will take place at the AEC, located at 148-150 South College Avenue, and will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
The workshops being held are as follows:
Time Management: Monday, Feb. 16, Thursday, Feb. 19, Monday, April 6, and Thursday, April 9;
Note-taking: Monday, Feb. 23, Thursday, Feb. 26, Monday, April 13, and Thursday, April 16;
Reading Strategies: Monday, March 2, Thursday March 5, Monday, April 20, and Thursday, April 23;
Test-taking: Monday, March 9, Thursday, March 12, Monday, April 27, and Thursday, April 30; and
Preparing for Finals: Monday, May 11, Thursday, May 14, and Monday, May 18.
These series of workshops are free to all University students throughout the academic year and no pre-registration is necessary.
Students are encouraged to bring class materials for use in the workshops and, for those who would benefit from more sustained work on study skills, to register for UNIV113, the Study Skills SkilMod course.
This one-credit pass/fail class includes comprehensive coverage of strategies for successful studying, which are then put to use in a concurrent "target class" of the student's choice. While the course is aimed at freshmen and sophomores, exceptions can be made for other students when needed.
Throughout the year, the AEC provides individual and group tutoring for a number of courses. In addition, they offer intake appointments to help students assess their strengths and challenges -- an opportunity to provide additional, individualized information about helpful resources. In particular, students in academic difficulty can benefit from this one-on-one academic counseling.
